Families at FirstSteps

The Enrolment Process

1

Reach Out

Contact us by phone, email, or through this website. A member of our team will respond within 48 hours to answer your initial questions and schedule a visit.

2

School Visit

We invite every family for a school visit before enrolment. You will meet our team, see our classrooms, and ask any questions you have. We want you to feel certain that FirstSteps is the right fit.

3

Child Observation

Before your child begins, we conduct a brief, relaxed observation to understand how they learn. This is how we ensure that from their very first day, your child is supported in the right way.

4

Enrolment and Orientation

Once observation is complete, we walk your family through our enrolment process, classroom placement, and everything you need to feel fully prepared.

What to Expect as a FirstSteps Parent

Regular Progress Updates

We share structured updates on your child’s learning throughout the term, not just at the end. You will always know how your child is doing, what they are working on, and how you can support them at home.

Open Communication

We share structured updates on your child’s learning throughout the term, not just at the end. You will always know how your child is doing, what they are working on, and how you can support them at home.

Home Learning Support

We provide practical guidance to help you continue supporting your child’s learning at home. You do not need to be an expert. You just need to be present, and we will show you how.

Inclusion in Your Child’s Journey

For children with learning difficulties, parents are active partners in the process. We involve you in reviewing your child’s learning plan, understanding their progress, and shaping the support they receive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Our academic programmes are aligned with the Nigerian national curriculum, with additional enrichment and support layered in for each child’s needs. With addition to our American curriculum, our literacy and numeracy programmes go beyond curriculum requirements to ensure every child builds the foundational skills that the curriculum assumes but does not always develop.

We use differentiated instruction, meaning the same lesson is taught in multiple ways to reach different kinds of learners. Children are not separated from their peers. Support is designed into the classroom environment. Teachers use formative assessment data to group children for targeted practice during specific parts of the day.

We keep class sizes intentionally small. This is a core part of how we ensure that every child is known, observed, and well supported.

We use a structured literacy approach grounded in the science of reading. Children receive daily explicit phonics instruction, guided reading practice, spelling and writing reinforcement, and formative assessment. Our approach follows the Learning Without Limits Reading Accelerator model, which has produced measurable fluency gains across 43 schools in Nigeria. IEPFORGE is our digital tool for creating and managing Individual Education Plans for children who need additional learning support. Parents whose children have an IEP will use IEPFORGE to stay updated and engaged. You can learn more on the IEPFORGE page.
